Nestled in the woods of Dalswinton Estate is a rather unusual and special sight - a bright red tin church!
The Dalswinton Barony Church is one of the last remaining examples of a "flat-pack church". The church was built in 1881 after being ordered from a missionary catalogue. It came in a flat-pack and in the spirit of Victorian IKEA, it was assembled on site.
The church is really quite striking, with a spire and gothic-style windows - not to mention the bright red colour! I think you can even get married in the church - imagine the fun and quirky pictures.
If you are lucky enough to get inside, there is impressive wood panelling inside and stained glass windows!
Visit Dalswinton Barony Church
We would recommend visiting the church if you are looking for something a little different when visiting the Dumfries area. Dalswinton is less than 10 miles from Dumfries, so easy to drive to. If you are travelling to/from the central belt we recommend stopping here on your way in/out of D&G as it is pretty handy to get on to the motorway A74(M) at Moffat from here.
There is a good sized car park at the pack of the church, where you can park your car and have a wander.
As well as taking in the church and any pictures of the church you can also enjoy the surrounding area. There is a number of paths through the forest, which offer options for walkers and dog-walkers. There is even a lovely loch! Some of the paths are steep and likely to be muddy in the rain, so wear wellies/boots and I don't think it is wheelchair/pushchair friendly.
However, for shorter walks there is the Journey Garden which was created in celebration of all those who lived, worked and loved the Estate. There are a number of engraved stones to enjoy and it is positioned to get a view of the loch and Grounds.
